A classic sci fi novel that, when published in the 70s, was part of a return to 'hard sci fi' (a style of writing characterized by a heavy emphasis on scientific accuracy or technical detail --- and Niven seems to serve that up in this tale of a motley crew (the booster-spiced 200-year-old human Louis wu, the incredibly lucky Teela, the taciturn Kzin named 'Speaker-to-Animals ---an 8ft sentient tiger-like alien--- and the freaky Pierson's Puppeteer named Nessus who organized the whole trip...

The story really takes off once they get to the ringworld... the scope is huge, and the numbers (in terms of time, speed and distance) are mindboggling... most enjoyable is the interplay between the four central characters...

Classic sci-fi... However, I did like Christopher Priest's "Inverted World" better...

A Puppeteer recruits a group to travel to the Ringworld, a large, artificial construct that is a very large band around a sun.

This group includes Louis Wu, a 200 year old bored junkie, your average warrior Kzin type, but for his people, he is remarkable tolerant, and a woman named Teela Brown. She is included for her presumable genetic dispensation towards luck being the result of so many winning birth lotteries.

What the Puppeteer really wants they have yet to find out.

Ringworld is an tale involving Louis (a 200 year old human male - though physically in his prime), Teela (a very lucky twenty-year old human woman), Speaker To Animals (a kzin - an aggressive alien evolved from a feline species) and Nessus (a puppeteer - an alien race responsible for manipulating any species that enter their sphere of influence). This oddball team attempt to explore the Ringworld, which is basically a giant ring around the sun on which complete ecologies exist. After crash landing, they journey across the land only to find that society has completely broken down and they must find their own way to return to Earth. Truly breathtaking imagination and good sci-fi.
