David Ruffle has taken on the challenge of writing a short novel in the style of Dr Watson, and all in all he does pretty well.The development isn't identical, and the characters have different names, but if I mention a bloodless corpse, hypnotic seduction, and a nocturnal Transylvanian nobleman you'll get the idea. Mr Ruffle paints a vivid picture of Lyme and its harbour. The characters are distinct individuals: the charming landlady, the insufferable police inspector, Watson's friend the local doctor, and all the others. And the plot is undeniably exciting! Six short stories, varying in length and mood, complete the book. - Sherlock Holmes Society of London
