Gr 3-7-From its origins to the latest World Cup finals, Hornby covers the history of the sport. Brief discussions of such topics as shoes, uniforms, equipment, and the evolution of the rules are also included. Like other "Eyewitness" titles, the pages are jam-packed with trivia illustrated by numerous full-color photographs of players and memorabilia that will please fans. However, despite a picture of Mia Hamm on the cover, only men are discussed in the sections on famous teams and players and a mere five paragraphs in the entire book reference women. While Gary Lineker's Soccer (2000) or The Young Soccer Player (1994, both DK) focus on the skills and basic rules, Hornby vividly captures the legacy of the sport. His book may not be used as frequently as those describing soccer skills and drills, but it will find a place for those wanting to trace the history of the sport.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
