About the Author


Dr Kathryn Hay is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Field Education in the School of Social Work at Massey University. She is also Chair of the New Zealand Council of Social Work Educators field education committee and secretary of the New Zealand Association of Cooperative Education. She is on the editorial board of the Asia Pacific Journal of Cooperative Education. Kathryn is a registered social worker and a member of the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers. She has been the recipient of several awards including the Ako Aotearoa National Project Fund Award; several Massey University research and teaching awards; an NZAID post-graduate research award and a Claude McCarthy Award. Kathryn’s most recent research has focused on enhancing the quality and sustainability of social work field education. She has published nationally and internationally, individually and with colleagues from Massey and other tertiary institutions, on various aspects of work integrated learning, social work education and human rights.


Lareen Cooper is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Head of School in the Social Work and Social Policy programme at Massey University’s School of Social Work. She has worked at Massey for nine years, and has an extensive background in health services management. She is currently a member of the Social Worker Registration Board’s Complaints and Disciplinary Tribunal. Her practice and research interests include leadership, social and health services management and working with refugees. Lareen has a number of committee roles in the School of Social Work and is the school’s representative on the Council of Social Work Education Aotearoa New Zealand. She also chairs the College of Health Examination Committee. Lareen is a registered social worker.

Dr Michael Dale has been a senior lecturer in the Social Work and Social Policy Programme at Massey’s School of Social Work since 2011. He is a registered social worker, and has 33 years’ work experience within the social services sector as a practitioner, trainer, project leader, policy adviser and manager. He has worked for central government, local government and the NGO sector. His practice and research interests have included working with violent men and their partners, social service leadership, management and practice development. He is a Member of the Academic Programmes Committee of the Massey’s College of Health.
