Reviews

The Statue of Liberty is indeed an imposing sight. For those who have sailed in and out of New York, the view of the island and the statue can be quite emotional. The statue was a gift to America from the French government and that fact and its creator Gustav Eiffel are not mentioned. Nor is the campaign to raise money for the pedestal on which the statue stands. That story will fascinate young readers because it is hard to believe that even a penny was significant in the campaign to raise funds for the pedestal. The pictures do give a sense of the size of the statue and the book makes reference to its impact on immigrants arriving in America. As part of the "American Symbol" series, this title is a very simple introduction to one of America's most recognizable symbols. On the first page of this very interesting book is a feature called words to know (pictures and text) and a table of contents. The closing page includes references about the topic, websites, plus an index. This book is leveled as guided reading B with the word count of eighty-seven., Children's Literature
