Les Carlyon, author of the critically acclaimed and bestselling GALLIPOLI, was born in northern Victoria in 1942 into a family steeped in horses and racing. He has been editor of the Melbourne Age and editor-in-chief of the Herald and Weekly Times group. He has won the Walkley Award, the Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award and the Carlton & United Best Australian Sports Writing Award (three times). He still rides occasionally, but only when no one is looking.
