JAMES GRAHAM CAMPBELL is Emeritus Professor of Medieval Archaeology at the University of London and a specialist in Viking and late Celtic archaeology. He helped set up the first British degree course in medieval archaeology at University College London. SEAN McGRAIL is former Visiting Professor of Maritime Archaeology at the University of Oxford.
