About the Author

Nicola Davies has been fascinated by the natural world since she was very young. Graduating from King's College, Cambridge with an honours degree in zoology, she went on to become a television and radio presenter (she is perhaps best known as the presenter of The Really Wild Show), writer and producer. She also lectures on natural history on cruise ships, and over the last few years this has enabled her to travel all over the world. Amongst her books for children are three other Walker titles: Big Blue Whale, One Little Turtle and Bat Loves the Night. Nicola lives in Devon with her husband and their two children.

Reviews

Gr 4-6-A lively, personal narrative by an enthusiastic zoologist. Davies discovered dolphins as a young child, and her fascination with these engaging creatures has never waned. Here she records her experiences on two census expeditions-one off Newfoundland, and the other in the Indian Ocean. Traveling by sailboat, she and her more experienced companions slipped silently along the surface of the dolphins' world, listening in on cetacean conversations with a microphone, and even swimming with a large pod of pantropical spotted dolphins. The animated text contains some data, and information boxes, diagrams, and the captions of the many eye-catching photos provide more. The distinctive layout features large print of varied sizes and fonts, bold chapter headings, some colorful backgrounds and photos, and labeled drawings-sometimes all on one page. A brief guide to the size, markings, and distribution of 31 dolphin species is included. While this may not be the first choice for in-depth material, the topic will lure readers and they will find themselves entranced by the eager enthusiasm that pours from the pages and may inspire some to consider science as a career.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
