Nancy Garhan Attebury - Children's Literature
Gallop into the realm of horses with this book from "The World Of"
series. Fascinating facts are sure to entertain and teach young
horse lovers. But the book is not limited to horse lovers. It is
for all readers who enjoy animals. Younger readers may entertain
themselves by looking at the many illustrations that range from
photographs and woodcuts to bright watercolors. Right off the bat
an excellent contents page lets readers know what they are likely
to find. Main categories are broken into four to six topics. Topics
include "Horse Sense," "Grooming," and "Myth and Magic." The book
is packed with informative, organized material. The pages display a
few large print paragraphs, as well as diagrams, maps, and steps to
follow in small print. Sections on plants poisonous to horses,
rules for feeding, and horses as used for transportation are
indicative of the diverse ideas covered. If there is anything that
limits this book, it is the lack of information about the large
number of working western cow horses of today. The only information
about western cow horses is featured in the rodeo section. There
should be more information on working cow horses. Nevertheless,
much can be gained from reading this book. An excellent glossary
and index follow the main text. 2004, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin,
Ages 8 to 12.
