About the Author

Michael F. Roizen, MD, is the four-time #1 New York Times bestselling author and co-founder and originator of the popular RealAge.com website. He is Chief Wellness Officer and chair of the Wellness Institute of the Cleveland Clinic and Chief Medical Consultant to The Dr. Oz Show. He currently lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Mehmet Oz, MD, is a cardiothoracic surgeon. He has won nine Daytime Emmy Awards for The Dr. Oz Show. A professor of surgery at Columbia University, he directs the Complementary Medicine Program at New York--Presbyterian Hospital and performs more than fifty heart operations a year. Dr. Oz has written eight New York Times bestselling books, including Food Can Fix It, YOU: The Owner's Manual, YOU: The Smart Patient, YOU: On a Diet, YOU: Staying Young, and the award-winning Healing from the Heart.

Media-star physician authors Roizen and Oz have published no less than six bestsellers beginning with You: The Owner's Manual. Having covered optimal self-health, diet and nutrition, longevity and beauty, they now tackle the issues and questions of parents-to-be. In their familiar straightforward, colloquial and often humorous style, and assisted by ob/gyn Margaret L. McKenzie and other expert writers, they take on pregnancy and birth in this brand-extending volume. Like other pregnancy guides, the book covers all the basics: fertility; risks; prenatal nutrition and supplements; managing stress, "pregnancy brain" and mood; physical symptoms; exercise; sex; choosing a birth plan and medical professional; delivery; the postpartum period; and infant care, along with self-tests, sidebars, food plans and recipes, and content-heavy appendixes. Proceeding topic-by-topic instead of the formulaic week-by-week or month-by-month diary approach of most pregnancy books, it also provides interesting biological and physiological information about hormones, digestion, morning sickness and other maternal-fetal interaction. Although the updated edition of What To Expect When You're Expecting is in many ways a more useful reference, this volume will serve as an excellent compendium. (Dec.) The latest "owner's manual" from Roizen and Oz takes on pregnancy with its usual casual yet informative style. In over 400 pages, they cover everything a mother-to-be and her partner (assumed to be male) might want to know, from biology basics to nutrition and recipes. Among the highlights is the section on the baby's brain development as it relates to the senses, which is sure to fascinate readers curious about what their newborn will and won't have the ability to experience. Also of note are the "YOU Tool" sections, which give practical advice on choosing a care provider, guidelines on medications and other toxins, and recipes for a "Lifestyle 180." The appendix on vaccinations is particularly useful, as it begins by pointing out that even among the authorship team there exists disagreement and proceeds to give a very balanced overview of the controversy. Each author discloses what choices they made regarding vaccines for their children and why. Verdict Among pregnancy overviews, this book stands out as a middle ground between the prosy What To Expect style and the chatty Girlfriend's Guide style.-Mindy Rhiger, St. Paul, MN Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.
