V. S. Kemanis grew up in the East Bay Area of California in a family with six amazing siblings and parents passionate about politics, social issues, theater, and music. Mealtimes were often raucous, stimulating, intellectual, and fun gatherings in a household full of family and interesting guests, musicians, actors, artists, professors, and university students. Ms. Kemanis holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Colorado Law School, Boulder. She pursued her legal career in New York, where she has been a criminal prosecutor of street crime and organized crime for county and state agencies, argued criminal appeals for the prosecution and defense, conducted complex civil litigation, and worked for judges and appellate courts, most recently as the supervising editor of appellate decisions. Ms. Kemanis is also an accomplished dancer of classical ballet, modern jazz, and contemporary styles and has performed, taught, and choreographed in California, Colorado, and New York. During a wonderful time when her children were young, she took a decade hiatus from her legal career and owned and managed a popular dancewear shop. Short fiction by Ms. Kemanis is available in five award-winning collections, and her stories have been published widely in literary journals, magazines, and anthologies. Her novels of legal suspense draw upon her experience in criminal law and feature prosecutor Dana Hargrove who, like the author, juggles a high-powered legal career with family responsibilities. Ms. Kemanis lives in New York and is a member of the New York chapter of the Mystery Writers of America.
"Uniquely powerful and thought provoking... An exceptional collection of literary triumphs that showcase the variety and vibrancy of the modern short story, Your Pick is recommended without reservation." (Book Viral)"Rich in metaphors and intensely provocative descriptive passages, these stories are to be tasted, savored, enjoyed and read over and over again... Your Pick is a powerful tribute to this author's mastery of the art of creating not just a good story, but a story that needs to be read many times to appreciate the full power of its presentation." (Readers' Favorite)"Kemanis is a writer of substance. She exposes expressions of despair hidden behind masks of joviality. She hears and conveys what people think regardless of what they say. She creates moments of tension, drama, and pathos in the midst of seemingly benign situations... A wise person once said there are no boring stories, only boring writers. Kemanis authors the former and is the polar opposite of the latter. RECOMMENDED" (The U.S. Review of Books)
