These tracks, recorded between 1957 and 1961, capture the freshness that permeates all Vic Damone's great recordings. They feature the singer at a zenith of popularity. His ability to capture a ballad's essence comes from a solid and pure tone, and an exactness and intelligence of phrasing.
The numbers he sings here are some all-time favorites in the canon of popular music. "Almost Like Being in Love" is taken at a breezy pace, and Damone, with dead-on dramatic sense, nails the song with precision and vocal technique. The same goes for "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," except that here he uses graceful and languorous deliberation. This evergreen, like all his ballads taken at slow to medium tempos, displays him at his best.
