Take a dash of Jacques Brel's romantic disillusionment, a pinch of Serge Gainsbourg's decadent artfulness, and a healthy dose of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen's classy, gravel-voiced songpoems, cook it up in Italy, and you just might get something approximating Paolo Conte. Long before his late-'90s breakthrough to the U.S. market, Conte was turning out rich, fully realized works like 1987 double album AQUAPLANO. Conte's 10-packs-of-cigarettes croon is framed here by a wide array of arrangements: the sleek, electronic-tinted title cut isn't far afield from what Cohen did a year later on I'M YOUR MAN, "Dope Le Sei" is full of elegant orchestration, and of course plenty of cuts are based on Conte's sparse piano stylings. A stylistic tour de force, AQUAPLANO shows what America was missing before the Nonesuch BEST OF collection took Conte intercontinental.
