Performer Notes
  • THE AIRING OF GRIEVANCES is the loud, bitchy, smart, and messy debut from Glen Rock, New Jersey, agitators Titus Andronicus. A special mixture of punk-sloppy guitars, irritated attitudes, and high-art allusions, the album has a shut-up-and-listen immediacy rare in recent rock. Singer Patrick Stickles smears his ego all over the place, brazenly quoting from Camus's THE STRANGER, throwing around f-bombs, and making grand declarations about modern malaise. It might all be a little off-putting if the entire presentation weren't so irascibly lovable. "Titus Andronicus" and "No Future" actually do achieve a present-day importance, while "Arms Against Atrophy" and "Fear and Loathing in Mahwah NJ" showcase the precise musicianship hiding beneah the murky production.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.68) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "There's emo in the tortured lyrics and E Street Band in the arrangements, both appropriate for a Jersey crew."

Spin (p.128) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his New Jersey quintet unfurls a series of banner-waving, punkish anthems that, with its E Street Band-through-a-blender production, convey a raw, deeply palpable blue-collar sympathy."

Entertainment Weekly (p.57) - "With thrash-and-burn riffs, shout-along rants, E Street Band-style blue-collar blues, and tin-can acoustics..."

Alternative Press (p.113) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "Titus Andronicus kick up the Boss influence and rock out like a punked-up version of Neutral Milk Hotel."

Q (Magazine) (p.105) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he aggro is underpinned by sturdy, sing-along melodies, while Stickles's serrated wail ensures the music cuts emotionally deep."

Blender (Magazine) (p.64) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir debut owes its tidal sweep to a heart-tugging Springsteenian grandiosity in the form of mournful harmonicas, heraldic 'Be My Baby' drum intros and lung-busting refrains as buoyant as sea chanteys."

Clash (magazine) (p.95) - "[N]ine tracks of garage squall....'The Airing Of Grievances' is not without its moments most melodious, as Pogues-like passages evoke images of sing-alongs in sweaty basement clubs."
