Performer Notes
  • There is a tangible sense of urgency throughout the debut release from Ypsilanti, MI, native Cutthroat. Attempting to carve out a niche in the Detroit area rap scene, Cutthroat comes across as a talented, raw lyricist of the underground variety. A veteran of basement tapes and painstaking years of building his craft, the Midwest MC spits with a rapid-fire, flaming tongue. His deliberate style is complemented by equally tailored production schemes of guttural bass drums and low-register piano tones provided by O.P.M. The underground mantra of tearing down artists who stress gloss over substance at times gets repetitive on this effort, but the sentiment is well taken nonetheless. Detroit-area underground rap has always had the benefit of influences from both coasts, and Analyze & Interpret is no exception. The tri-metropolitan styles of Eastern Michigan's Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor/Detroit underground railroad are reflected most potently on the top-notch crew love track "The Cypha"; the MCs featured could certainly give Eminem's D12 crew a run for their money. While some of the tracks come off better than others, none of the 17 offerings is wasted or without some pith or heartfelt emotion. The most sincere composition is the irresistible "From My Eyes to Your Ears," a didactic ode to life's daily struggles. While the style employed does not always engage and occasionally tries to cram too many words into rhymes, Cutthroat's fierce lyrical energy rarely misses the mark. ~ M.F. DiBella
