  • Count Basie is best known for his swing orchestras (big bands). But on BASIE JAM 3, we hear the legendary pianist "jamming" with an all-star octet. In truth, Basie's music has always been based around spontaneity and fun-the hallmarks of jamming. Basie, the consummate entertainer, always encouraged playful, extended improvisations from his sidemen.
  • BASIE JAM 3 is consistent with the acclaimed band leader's credo. Soloists Benny Carter, Al Grey, Clark Terry, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis should require no formal introduction. These four horn men have developed highly personalized styles of improvisation that have since influenced a whole new generation of jazz players. Their keen and insightful-sometimes sensitive, sometimes bold-improvisations epitomize modern jazz at its best. All of the musicians heard on the distinctly blues-based BASIE JAM 3 render great performances. Basie and company swing with elegance and grit. Standout tracks such as the barn burner "Bye Bye Blues" and the ballad "I Surrender Dear" encompass the depth and breadth of Basie's musical output.
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (11/92, p.51) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "..a masters class in jazz summitry...The spirit is friendly and non-confrontational...Basie's elfin swing knits it all nicely together, peeking out from behind corners for some of the most resourceful piano solos you'll ever hear.."
