Although pop metal was still a popular genre in 1988 (Def Leppard, Motley Crue, etc.), there were new rock music styles that were threatening to overthrow it--such as the rough street rock of bands like Guns N' Roses. A lot had changed in the rock world since Night Ranger's last album, 1985's SEVEN WISHES, and the band found themselves at a career crossroads with their next release, 1988's BIG LIFE.
It was another fine slice of melodic rock, and spawned the popular title track to Michael J. Fox's hit movie "The Secret of my Success." But the album performed below expectations chart and sales-wise, ultimately contributing the band going on hiatus shortly thereafter.
