Performer Notes
  • Original score composed by Luiz Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
  • Liner Note Author: Imme Schade VanWestrum.
  • On this landmark 1959 soundtrack, one can witness the actual birth of bossa nova as co-composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luis Bonfa first conceived it: against the backdrop of the authentic street samba from which it came. Following the film's story, the tracks vividly communicate the fragility (and necessity) of the softer, cooler style, as when Orfeu takes an advantage of a rare lull in the action to croon Jobim's "A Felicidade" or Bonfa's famous "Manha De Carnaval." Soon enough however, the ominously ever-present rhythms of Carnaval reassert themselves and swallow up this gentle music much as Death eventually steals Euridyce down to Hades.
  • The soundtrack is also startling for its inclusion of the optical track from the film's opening credits, a raucous aural collage of samba and street noise that anticipates today's cut-and-paste aesthetic by 40 years. And if this mix of styles isn't enough, listeners are also treated to an accordion-led Forro version of Jobim's "O Nosso Amor," excerpts from an actual Macumba ceremony, and an orgy of Brazilian percussion that ends the recording.
