Six years after her solo debut, TONIGHT & THE REST OF MY LIFE, ex-Veruca Salt singer Nina Gordon offers up an assured and emotionally engaging follow-up, BLEEDING HEART GRAFFITI. Like the former outing, this 2006 record is produced by Bob Rock (Metallica), who brings a surprisingly light touch to the guitar-driven tunes, opting for vibrant pop over an edgier sound. Although much of the album is musically upbeat, the themes, which focus on the highs and lows of love, can be deceptively dark, as on the chiming and utterly catchy "Kiss Me 'Till It Bleeds" ("I'm gonna hang myself on someone else's just-enough rope"). While Gordon/Veruca Salt fans may have been frustrated by the long gap before this disc, the strong songs on BLEEDING HEART GRAFFITI should satisfy.
