Although BREEZES is an album of genuine musical and historical interest, some Kate Wolf fans feel that this 1995 reissue misrepresents itself. Originally released in 1973 as WE WALKED BY THE WATER by Lionel Kilberg and Kate Wolf with Don Coffin, the 12 songs on BREEZES are Kilberg and Wolf collaborations--Kilberg wrote the lyrics, Wolf the music--largely sung by Kilberg, with Wolf playing guitar and piano and singing harmonies.
Although a fine album in a sort of proto-Windham Hill art-folk vein with occasional Gram Parsons influences peeking through, BREEZES is largely Kilberg's affair, with Wolf's contributions, though important, largely in the background. Recommended, but don't expect a true Kate Wolf album.
