  • Improbably hailing from Staten Island, New York, the Budos Band are a creative, like-minded bunch who've been collectively bitten by the Afrobeat bug. Horn-driven riffing propels instrumental tracks like the Fela soundalike "King Charles" (complete with Farfisa organ), while "Up From the South" conjures an Africanized version of the Meters, and their version of Sly Stone's "Sing a Simple Song" does likewise for Booker T and the MGs. With a raw, grainy feel, the recording's raucous, confident swing recalls instrumental soul music's early-1970s glory days.
Professional Reviews
CMJ (p.5) - "There's a lot going on with all the trombones, trumpets, saxes, bongos, guiros and shekeres, but thankfully, everybody's serving the groove."
