  • Every minute listening to Burlap to Cashmere is spent in the warmth of their alt-folk sunshine. Having cultivated the scene now occupied by Fleet Foxes, Mumford & Sons, and others, BTC brought an imposing void to the hearts of acoustic alternative fans when they failed to put out an immediate follow-up to their acclaimed 1998 debut. Their self-titled sophomore disc finds BTC no less adventurous, no less melodious, and no less influential, proving that no one else quite has the chops to mix '60s-style acoustic folk with Greek rhythms, flamenco guitar, and influences from James Taylor to Cat Stevens to Van Morrison. Mere seconds into the first single, "Build a Wall," the tribal rhythm beats itself into your very consciousness and never lets up. The album is bathed in singer/guitarist/songwriter Steven Delopoulos' transcendent vocals. Give credit to producer Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits) for bringing out the nuances of this splendidly diverse and enjoyable record. ~ Jared Johnson
