Performer Notes
  • Released at the time of his tragic death from cancer at 51 years of age, the double-disc best-of compilation Canciones 1980-2009 spans the entire recording career of acclaimed singer/songwriter Antonio Vega, from his early days in the band Nacha Pop until the latter-day albums he released after the turn of the century. Yet the bulk of the compilation is drawn from the three solo albums he released during the 1990s: No Me Ir‚ Ma¤ana (1991), Oc‚ano de Sol (1994), and Anatom¡a de una Ola (1998). These three albums, Vega's initial full-length solo efforts, account for 17 of the 30 songs compiled here, with five to six songs culled from each album. The seven Nacha Pop songs that open the compilation are a fitting introduction to Vega's career output, especially the opener, "Chica de Ayer," the classic new wave hit from 1980 that jump-started the band's career. The other Nacha Pop inclusions -- all of them classics -- are "Antes Que Salga el Sol" from Nacha Pop (1980); "Atr s," "Juego Sucio," and "Sonrisa de Ganador" from Buena Disposici¢n (1982); "Relojes en la Oscuridad" from Dibujos Animados (1985); and "Lucha de Gigantes" from the live swan song Nacha Pop 1980-1988 (1988). From this point onward, the chronologically sequenced compilation delves into Vega's first three solo albums, beginning with yet another classic song, "Se Dejaba Llevar por T¡." As aforementioned, these first three albums comprise the bulk of Canciones 1980-2009, and while there's a good argument for this, given the strength of these albums relative to what followed after the turn of the century, the post-millennial albums De un Lugar Perdido (2001), Basic• (2002), Escapadas (2004), and 3000 Noches con Marga (2005) are represented by a mere six inclusions. Moreover, there is only a song apiece from the studio albums De un Lugar Perdido ("Estaciones") and 3000 Noches con Marga ("Angel de Ori¢n"), whereas there are three songs from Escapadas, a compilation of collaborations. This complaint aside, the one song from the live album Basic•, a stripped-down version of the Nacha Pop classic "Una D‚cima de Segundo" from 1984, is a welcome inclusion. Though weighted heavily in favor of Vega's first three albums, Canciones 1980-2009 is an excellent overall overview of the legendary singer/songwriter's too-brief career. A more concise alternative is Autorretratos (2004), a 17-track single-disc compilation that focuses exclusively on his solo output, leaving aside the Nacha Pop material.
