Performer Notes
  • In case the listening public hadn't gotten their fill of U.K. bands from the 2000s (Bloc Party, the Futureheads, and Franz Ferdinand, among them) who built their sound on early-1980s post-punk and new wave, along came the Rakes in 2005 with CAPTURE/RELEASE. But while the ghosts of classic Clash and Gang of Four songs can be heard floating through the British quartet's debut, the Rakes aren't merely copy-cat Johnny Come Latelys.
  • Instead the band's take on arty, punky, melody-heavy rock is fresh and invigorating. From the opening high-octane blast of "Strasbourg" through the bouncing rhythms and swirling riffs of "22 Grand Job" to the dub reggae of "Violent," the Rakes synthesize their influences beautifully, and evade accusations of being derivative by playing sharp songs with the wiry energy of a coiled spring. CAPTURE/RELEASE heralds the Rakes as a welcome addition to the post-punk revival bandwagon.
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (p.136) - "[T]he quartet's strong pop sensibility means that they might survive beyond this fading post-punk boomlet." -- Grade: B+
