Performer Notes
The Art Ensemble of Chicago: Muhal Richard Abrams (piano); Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, Roscoe Mitchell.
There is always something to enjoy on an Art Ensemble of Chicago album, and CHI-CONGO is no exception. Whereas many avant jazz outfits focused on creating loud, chaotic squalls informed by post-bop trends, the AEC took a conceptual approach that included percussive soundscapes, incidental noise, propulsive free-form jams, and expressive improvisation.
The opening title cut evokes tribal Africa with its burbling percussion and clattering blocks and marimba. "Enlorfe, Pts. 1 & 2" feature intense improvisation on the horns that reference Ornette Coleman while still remaining true to the AEC's unique aesthetic. The final track--the buoyant, surprising "Hipparippp"--closes out this batch of sonic explorations from one of the best and most enjoyable avant-jazz aggregates.
