  • U.K. electronic duo Dead Fader aren't as beholden to the overwrought faux macho and "darkness" of the dubstep scene as most of their peers. Their music has a childish joy to it; they seem to take pleasure in creating gross squelching noises with their synthesizers. Many tracks on Corrupt My Examiner recall Mr. Oizo with their thick, syrupy buzzing and rumbling. While the music is fairly simple, and not at all dependent on anthemic keyboard riffs designed to get the dancefloor pumping, the rhythms are intricately plotted. The title track features skittering beats not unlike those found on Autechre discs like Tri Repetae and Confield. "Fairplay" offers the sound of a talking robot slowly descending into madness, like HAL at the end of the movie 2001, as staticky drum hits cycle endlessly and the keyboards keep squishing and slurping along. "Red Question" and "2 Ton Man," the disc's final two cuts, are massively distorted, seemingly designed to test the home listener's speaker capacity and not at all recommended for headphone listening. This is an album that starts out fun but gets more assaultive and aggressive as it goes on -- a genuine audio journey, which is rare in any type of music, but electronica in particular. ~ Phil Freeman
