Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Lennox Gordon, Eric "Bingy Bunny" Lamont, Robbie Shakespeare (guitar); Herman Marquis (alto saxophone); Tommy McCook (tenor saxophone); Bobby Ellis (trumpet); Lloyd Parks (bass instrument); Sly Dunbar (drum); Sticky (percussion).
  • Audio Mixer: Errol Thompson.
  • Widely considered the preeminent vocal harmony group of the roots reggae era, Culture were also chief exponents of the spiritual and social themes associated with Rastafarianism. At first blush, pairing such heavily cultural themes with the raffish deejay crowd would seem to indicate a recipe for a sound clash disaster. But CULTURE & THE DEEJAY'S AT JOE GIBBS--featuring toasts from deejays like U-Roy, Prince Far-I, and U Brown--tones down the slack chatter for more suitably Roots & Culture-oriented material.
Professional Reviews
The Wire (p.63) - "This set pulls together some of the group's 12" discomixes shared with an array of popular deejays of the day, plus a few tracks where 7" vocal sides are segued into the deejay version to form an extended mix."
