  • 1992's DREAM CAFE marked the beginning of Brown's most artistically fertile period. He'd come a long way from his rustic-sounding folkie beginnings, and though the previous DOWN IN THERE pointed strongly towards an aesthetic rebirth, this album saw that promise bear fruit. It's here that Brown finally begins to make full use of his craggy baritone, an instrument of unprecedented intimacy and sensuality. Sonically, DREAM CAFE moves between grinding, visceral, bluesy cuts like "You Drive Me Crazy" and "You Can Watch Me," where Brown gets deliciously down and dirty, and artier, more poetic tunes like the transcendent "Sleeper." DREAM CAFE is part of the consistent upward progression that continued unabated throughout Brown's career.
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (6/19/92, p.70) - "...[Brown's] varied musically--he'll do a grinding blues and even flirt with jazz....[he's] capable of pulling off a marvelous portrait..." - Rating: B
