EARLY MUSES is a collection of previously unreleased demos and early recordings.
Personnel includes: Dan Hicks (vocals, acoustic guitar); David LaFlamme (violin); Jaime Leopold (bass).
Producers include: Nick Reynolds.
Recorded in 1953 and from late 1967 to early 1968.
These 20 songs are some of the earliest recordings made by Dan Hicks, opening with his very first (recorded onto a 78 rpm home recording device at his cousin's house), as he sings "Home On The Range" at the age of 11 with his father in 1953. His interest in C&W, jazz, and folk is apparent in the range of these tunes.
In the '60s Hicks followed a couple of paths, first as a folksinger, then as a drummer in The Charlatans (during which he put his folk singing aside, though he continued to write). By the time he emerged in the late '60s with his band the Hot Licks, he had a formidable and distinct body of songs, many of which are heard here in their earliest incarnations, including "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away," "Canned Music," and "The Laughing Song." Hicks accompanies himself on guitar throughout, joined by a few other musical compadres.
