Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Robbie Williams (vocals); Planet Claire (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Gary Nuttall, Alex Dickson (vocals, guitar); Guy Chambers (vocals, keyboards); Fil Eisler (vocals, bass); Neil Tennant, Neil Hannon (vocals); Chris Shamrock (drums).
  • Though British pop sensation Robbie Williams first made waves in 1995 with his cover of George Michael's "Freedom," it would take several years before his true impact would be felt with the release of his smash major-label debut, THE EGO HAS LANDED.
  • His dynamic voice and "don't take yourself too seriously" sense of humor are a winning combination, as evidenced in "Strong" when he sings "early morning when I wake up, I look like Kiss but without the make-up." The ballad "Angels" shows that he's equally skilled in expressing the longing of the human soul. The allegory "Jesus in a Camper Van" uses clever name-dropping to make a point about personal responsibility and self-inflicted guilt. The stabs at modern-day values in the hit "Millennium" show just how catchy Robbie's sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek style can be. While his first album, LIFE THRU A LENS, made only slight strides for Williams, he truly arrived with THE EGO HAS LANDED.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (5/27/99, p.63) - 3 1/2 Stars (out of 5) - "...packed with disco beats, Vegas flash, rock energy and hipster wit. This kid is a Seventies variety show looking for a place to happen..."

Entertainment Weekly (12/24/99, p.146) - Ranked #1 Album of the Year in "The Best of 1999" - "...takes a broad, internationalists view of pop....roguishly appealing....he's a 'true' backstreet boy."

New Music Monthly (7/99, p.60) - "...a paradise for pop fans. Williams proffers a guitar-and-pomp concoction heavy on gushy arrangements....You'll surrender to him because he's the most irresistible thing you'll hear all year."
