Performer Notes
By the time of this 1981 debut solo album, David Lindley had literally lent his distinctive guitar sound to hundreds of other artists' recordings. His earliest work was in the '60s, with Kaleidoscope (US), but it is perhaps his role as accompanist for Jackson Browne that has earned him the most recognition. Lindley's love for--and knowledge of--a wide range of music makes this album an utter delight from beginning to end. He embraces reggae, loud and nasty blues, forgotten pop songs, New Orleans boogie, and more.
EL RAYO-X is no mere romp through diverse musics. Rather, there is a natural flow as Lindley finds a musical common denominator in the dozen songs. All of them are sturdy and friendly compositions, made completely believable in the hands of Lindley and his cohorts. Quite simply, EL RAYO-X is a wonderful album. Lindley's guitar playing is unmistakable throughout. It serves as an inviting match for his singing voice, which is rich with character and emotion.
