  • This recording of the Steve Lacy Quintet performing live in Paris was recorded in 1975, but wasn't released until 2006. The program features all original compositions written by the versatile soprano saxophonist and played by an ensemble that includes cello and violin alongside more traditional jazz instrumentation. Wild, energetic, and decidedly avant, ESTEEM flirts with post-bop, Middle Eastern modalities, and funk, but it owes a good deal to quirky masters like Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor (both of whom Lacy played with). The group interplay is remarkable, and the improvising goes full boil across each of these six extended tracks.
Professional Reviews
JazzTimes (p.108) - "[I]t reveals Lacy's longtime quintet in peak form, interpreting six of his songs in fiery fashion."
