This EP by New Jersey's favorite sons of Emo, the humble-but-storied Thursday, effectively picks up where the band's previous grass-roots releases left off. Thursday's sound is a mix of aggressive, hardcore punk, melodic hard rock, and an indefinable third element that gives them a sound all their own. It's a bit of a surprise to find a band with a sound this hard-hitting whose vocalist sounds more like the Cure's Robert Smith than like any modern-day multiple-pierced shouter. Such are the inherent contradictions between melody and mayhem that create the tension essential to Thursday's approach. They are kings of the mosh, but their rabid legion of followers also surrender to the powerful melodies present on recordings like the brief-but-effective FIVE STORIES FALLING.
