The fifth and final volume in Ace Records' series of compilations centering on the deep catalog of R&B label Modern Records, originally founded by brothers Saul Bihari and Jules Bihari in 1945, reveals that there are still plenty of gems in the Modern vault, even if most of these sides never sold a lick outside of the particular artist's neighborhood. Highlights include swinging shuffle sides by Herb Fisher, Luke Jones, and Red Mack, two 1951 singles from Texan Goree Carter, and a previously unissued Jimmy Witherspoon cut, "Motel." ~ Steve Leggett
