Performer Notes
  • Gary Moore has tackled quite a few musical styles over the years -- fusion, heavy metal, blues -- and most are on display on the 2003 Japanese import/double-disc set Gold. While it's not a definitive Moore collection (some of his best work with Colosseum II and Thin Lizzy is nowhere to be found here), Gold contains just about all the highlights of Moore's solo years. Since the track listing is not in chronological order, Gold sometimes comes off like a haphazardly assembled mix tape -- as a pop-metal tune from the '80s will suddenly lead to a bluesy track from the '90s (such as when "After the War" is followed by "Cold Day in Hell"). But regardless, if you're looking for some great guitar playing, Gold is a solid collection, as Moore simply shines on such slow burning blues tracks as "Still Got the Blues," "Still in Love With You," and a cover of Roy Buchanan's "The Messiah Will Come Again." But Moore could also keep pace with the pop-metal bands of the '80s (as evidenced by "Wild Frontier," plus a pair of great tracks with the late/great Phil Lynott, "Out in the Fields" and "Military Man"), in addition to an amusing dig at all the groups that were shamelessly picking at Led Zeppelin's carcass at the time, "Led Clones" (which includes none other than Ozzy Osbourne on vocals). ~ Greg Prato
