Performer Notes
  • Reef: Gary Stringer (vocals); Kenwyn House (guitar); Benmont Tench (keyboards); Jack Bessant (bass); Dominic Greensmith (drums).
  • Additional Personnel: Chris Trujillo (percussion); Glorious Choir.
  • This 1997 release by indie rockers Reef features "Place Your Hands," "Summer's In Bloom," and "Higher Vibration."
  • With their second album Glow, Reef refused to change direction at all, even hiring Black Crowes producer George Drakoulias to work on the record. While Glow is essentially the same batch of Stones/Faces riffs and hoarse, soulful singing, it is more focused and better than its predecessor, and while it isn't particularly original, it is inspired. A handful of songs, particularly singles like "Place Your Hands" and "Consideration," are terrific, even if they are a bit too "classic" for their own good. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (7/18/97, p.84) - "...this young British band unabashedly wallows in the blues-based sound of early-'70s hard rock....Reef's heartfelt traditionalism should more than satisfy those who hunger for freshly manufactured classic rock." - Rating: B

Q (1/98, p.114) - Included in Q Magazine's "50 Best Albums of 1997."

Q (3/01, p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Fantastically overblown and exaggerated....Their star truly shone....Everything's bigger. Choruses, riffs, grooves and Gary Stringer's ludicrous impersonation of a rock singer..."
