Performer Notes
  • 2002 saw seemingly every facet of dance music gravitate to the sound of the samba, with even jungle veterans V Recordings getting in on the act, via Brazilian signing's Marky and XRS Land. Rainer Truby's Glucklich series pre-empted this interest by some years, however, reflecting the nu-jazz movement's appropriation of South American stylistics with a run of selections which drew upon both authentic works and more modern beats. Though earlier incarnations proved a little hit and miss, a paper thin distinction keeping the contrived from the more perspicuous tracks, this latest outing succeeds through a high hit rate of impressive contributions. The delicious "Fica Mai Com Deus" from Nicola Conte, and the switched tempo which creeps up from the Eddy and Dus remix of Les Gammas' "Outra Vida" are both typical of the infectious nature of this fusion of contemporary techniques with traditional instrumentation, while the emotive "Icarai" from Os Ipanemas, and Jorge Ben's 30-year old "Comanche" will hopefully act to inspire those who enjoy the music of Compost et al to dig a little deeper and source the plentiful vaults of original works. ~ Kingsley Marshall
