Collectables' 1994 Golden Classics features most of Deon Jackson's notable songs for Carla, chief among them his sweet, summery 1966 hit "Love Makes the World Go Round." While the sound on the collection is a little iffy, it's not enough to distract from the Motown-like charm of pop-soul songs like "Ooh Baby," "You Said You Loved Me," and "Love Takes a Long Time Growing." When Jackson affects a raspier style of singing on "Come Back Baby," it doesn't work quite as well as his silky-smooth tenor, but tracks like "I Need a Love Like Yours" and the Curtis Mayfield-esque "The Reason Why" prove that this change was a one-time fluke. It would have been nice to have had even more tracks from Jackson's full-length album Love Makes the World Go Round on this collection, but at 16 songs strong, Golden Classics is still a solid retrospective of one of pop-soul's lesser-known but worthwhile talents. ~ Heather Phares
