Having played with violinist Stephane Grappelli for many years and then solo, the British guitarist Martin Taylor is rightly regarded as one of the greatest European jazz musicians. Like his old boss, Grappelli, Taylor refuses to settle into a rut. And while some of his discs could be accused of being too mellow, GYPSY JOURNEY is Taylor re-investigating the Gallic roots of Grappelli's gypsy-jazz style (also that of Django Reinhardt, Grappelli's close partner in the '30s). With a band of German players--including Jermaine Landsberger, himself of Gypsy/Romany extraction--Taylor comes through with an engaging mix of minor-key melancholy and elegant but earnest swing.
