Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Alan Hampton (vocals); Jeremy Ylvisaker (vocals, guitar); Andrew Bird (vocals, guitar, violin); Martin Dosh (drums).
  • Recording information: La La Land; The Barn; Wall And Studio Victor.
  • Photographer: Todd Baxter.
  • In 2010, singer/songwriter, crafty violinist, and unstoppable whistling machine Andrew Bird released Useless Creatures, a nine-track set of instrumentals that were originally paired with the deluxe edition of 2009's Noble Beast. Released in 2012, Hands of Glory follows a similar trajectory, though far less reliant on instrumentals, arriving less than a year after the release of Bird's sixth studio album, the sweet, ornate, and occasionally ramshackle Break It Yourself. The eight-track companion piece includes alternate versions of album cuts like "Orpheo" and "Spirograph," a handful of classic country covers, and one brand-new track.
Professional Reviews
Q (Magazine) (p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Bird already has something unique going on -- the classical moments that give his modern, literate pop songs all their sweetness and delicacy."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.92) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Recorded around one microphone at Bird's Illinois barn and steeped in deliberate old-world atmosphere, HANDS OF GLORY still sacrifices none of Bird's cerebral elegance..."
