Performer Notes
  • This collection contains vintage basement 4-track recordings made between April 1974 and December 1977.
  • From the early-to-mid-'70s, Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale were contantly demoing original material on home recording equipment. It was during these sessions that the trademark Devo sound was first born (later perfected on such albums as ARE WE NOT MEN. Even though the songwriting wasn't as strong or focused as it would be once the band started releasing records in the late '70s, these demos are still very intriguing (many of these songs never appeared before). To the delight of Devo fans everywhere, Rykodisc issued a two-part compilation of this rare material in the early 90's; HARDCORE VOL. 1 and VOL. 2.
  • While casual Devo fans should stick to either their greatest hits packages or official albums, longtime fans will undoubtedly enjoy these early oddities. Of the album's 15 tracks, only three were re-recorded and appeared on later Devo albums (the anthems "Jocko Homo" and "Mongoloid," plus their cover of the Stones' "Satisfaction"), while a couple turned up as b-sides ("Social Fools" and "Soo Bawlz"). The vast majority of the tracks are previously unheard tracks--"Uglatto," "I'm A Potato," "Ono," "Auto Modown," "Space Girl Blues," and others.
