  • Artie Shaw is acknowledged as one of the great jazz clarinetists and bandleaders of the swing era. Initially, Shaw's combination of odd, modernistic charts and his lack of leadership ability made it impossible to keep a functioning band together. By 1940, however, Shaw had worked out the kinks and found himself in the same league as Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey with a string of hits including "Begin the Beguine," "Stardust," and "Frenesi." Big band historian Scott Yanow has done an admirable job compiling these 20 tracks onto a single disc. Along with remastered sound and a budget price tag, this set will please both the collector and casual fan. ~ Al Campbell
