Performer Notes
  • Recorded at Oz Studios, Baltimore, Maryland.
  • Most people don't know enough to miss the inimitable Tim Taylor, but those who followed Dayton, Ohio's unpredictable Brainiac have a poignant understanding of his death's impact. As Brainiac's singer, Taylor injected manic, cartoon-crazy energy into the band's quirky, experimental junkyard electro-punk. The arsenal of vocal personalities at Taylor's disposal was on full display in 1996's HISSING PROGS IN STATIC COUTURE, Brainiac's final full-length LP. His scorched falsetto on "Pussyfootin'" is simultaneously ridiculous and deeply soulful, the sound of a white geek performing Prince with no shame or restraint. And his discordant, electronically augmented screams on "I Am a Cracked Machine" make him sound like just that. Throughout, it's tough to tell whether he's keeping up with the music or it's keeping up with him, but broken whirrs, bleats, static, and other inorganic interruptions deform both the songs and the singer equally.
Professional Reviews
Alternative Press (6/96, p.72) - 4 - Well Done - "...spaced-out, art-punk, Moog-drenched...superhero wack-fest..."

Magnet (p.71) - "[A] brand of short-circuit robot rock that made dance music out of violent shrieks and spasms."

Option (7-8/96, p.92) - "...How can something so twisted be so pleasing to the ears? Brainiac is a rock'n'roll koan--a Zen riddle that can't be answered with the rational mind. It's best to relax and let these guys take you places you never knew existed..."

RIP (5/96, p.13) - 5 - Caviar - "...space sounds are intertwined with dissonant guitars that make for a brilliant marriage of distortion....if you want to get smacked in the face by a big fat wall of noise, enjoy this flat on your back."

NME (Magazine) (3/16/96, p.46) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Braniac's 13 point plan to destroy indie guitar preconceptions is progressing on schedule..."
