  • 1952 was a glorious year for commercial pop music, and this ASV/Living Era compilation doesn't miss much of it, even with a slight British tilt to its selections. 1952 was the year of the faux-dramatic "Wheel of Fortune" (Kay Starr), the beautifully ambling "Slow Poke" (Pee Wee King), the bustlingly erotic "Lover" (Peggy Lee), one of the best-ever commitment songs in "You Belong to Me" (Jo Stafford), and a pair of Doris Day's most joyous nuggets, "Sugarbush" and "A Guy Is a Guy." Hits of '52 also ranges far enough away from adult pop to take in Hank Williams, Vera Lynn, Ella Mae Morse, and Johnnie Ray. The only caveat, and that's a slight one, is that there may well be too much good material here -- year-by-year hits collections are usually good for picking up a host of obscurities (comparatively), but there's little left here that won't be familiar to fans of traditional pop. ~ John Bush
