Home for the Holidays is a standard soundtrack, combining covers with classics and pop songs with pieces of incidental music. The Jodie Foster-directed comedy about a dysfunctional family might have a quirky charm, but that didn't rub off on the soundtrack. There might be fine material here -- it's hard to argue with Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole, or even a piece of inspired kitsch like Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" -- but there's little context for any of this music, especially if you are unfamiliar with the film. And that's especially true for Rusted Root's cover of Santana's "Evil Ways," which sounds like a half-hearted attempt at a crossover hit single. Home for the Holidays is far from being an embarrassment -- there are enough good songs here to make it an enjoyable listen -- but it just doesn't have much purpose. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
