Performer Notes
  • Audio Mixer: Antoine Lehembre.
  • Composer, arranger, and producer Hector Zazou released a string of relentlessly inventive albums between 1983 and 2008. On the last of these, IN THE HOUSE OF MIRRORS, Zazou collaborated with Swara, an Indian-Uzbeki group who re-envision the classical music of the Middle East and South Asia. As with Zazou's previous projects, consummate craftsmanship and postmodern production techniques are clearly evident, yet IN THE HOUSE OF MIRRORS is devoid of jarring juxtapositions or clever devices. Instead, the music is pure and meditative, and creates a historical through-line from ancient tradition into the future. Released shortly after Zazou's death, IN THE HOUSE OF MIRRORS is a fitting testament of Zazou's brilliance.
Professional Reviews
The Wire (p.66) - "Zazou places the rich, grainy sound of tambur or slide guitar centre stage, then constructs an audio spider's web around the players: a delicate, shifting mix of reverbs, reversed samples and riffs, nearly all drawn from the instruments themselves."

Dirty Linen (p.40) - "[S]pacious and shimmering Indian music....The nuanced electronic treatments have prompted some people to compare Zazou's work with that of Brian Eno or Terry Riley, but he was luminary in his own right."
