The tracks on THE IMMORTAL SOUL OF JOHNNY ADAMS were recorded in the six years prior to Adams' career resurgence-a long string of critically acclaimed albums on Rounder Records. Stylistically, SOUL is a bit of mixed bag. There's a little disco, a little '60s soul, and even one song ("Closer to You") that is a throwback to the late-'50s R&B style of Brook Benton. As usual, Adams' seamless, soaring vocals provide the glue that holds the whole package together. He's particularly inspired on two excellent covers, a nicely funked up version of "Spanish Harlem" and a "Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You" that out-grits Wilson Pickett.
