  • When most people think of Nashville, the first style of music that comes to mind is country. That's only natural--Nashville is where so many of country's singers, musicians, promoters, A&R people and publicists are based. But anyone who has been to Nashville can tell you that Music City also has everything from blues and R&B to hip-hop. Bedlam, a Nashville trio, has nothing to do with country and everything to do with alternative rock. The threesome showed a fair amount of promise on its debut album, Into the Coals; the CD isn't perfect, but its strongest tracks indicated that Bedlam was a group to keep an eye on. At their best, the alterna-rockers make it clear that they have a way with a hook-- "Carnival Lights," "Closing Time" and the rowdy opener "Drink It Down" are perfect examples of how infectious Bedlam can be. The threesome has a jewel of a lead singer in Jay Joyce, who can be either sensitive or in-your-face, depending on his mood. Into the Coals is mildly uneven; a few of the tunes aren't terribly memorable, but more often than not, Bedlam hits its mark and gives listeners reason to have high hopes for the Nashville trio. ~ Alex Henderson
