Performer Notes
  • Full performer name: Teddy Wilson/Eubie Blake/Claude Hopkins/Dill Jones.
  • JAZZ PIANO MASTERS is a reissue of the 1977 album, with several previously unreleased tracks.
  • Personnel: Eubie Blake, Claude Hopkins, Dill Jones, Teddy Wilson (piano).
  • Recorded at The New School For Social Research in New York, New York on April
  • 10, 1972. Includes liner notes by Hank O'Neal.
  • This concert recording is a piano player's delight, and for any jazz fan, it's an opportunity to hear the form's development and evolution. Though, out of the four pianists, Teddy Wilson and Eubie Blake are really the only two still known today, the Welsh Dill Jones and New York City's Claude Hopkins play superbly.
  • Jones may have been the sole torch bearer of the great Fats Waller stride piano tradition, while Hopkins, who made his mark on Harlem's rich musical scene in the 1930s as a bandleader, rips through such classics as "Squeeze Me," "Three Little Words," and "Indiana." Teddy Wilson shows off his elegant swing abilities on "Body & Soul" and "Lil' Darlin'." However, Eubie Blake steals the show with his humorous outbursts and robust playing. A man who had written his first rag in 1899, Blake was the 20th century's last living link to a bygone era, and he shines here, particularly on "Tricky Fingers" and "Melodic Rag."
