Performer Notes
  • Author: Nick Lowe.
  • Photographer: R.A. Andreas.
  • Arranger: E. Claudette Freeman.
  • Country soul's secret weapon, Jim Ford only released one album--the classic HARLAN COUNTY--while he was alive, but a series of posthumous collections of previously unreleased sessions brought him more acclaim than he had during his lifetime. This self-titled album was to have been Ford's second release, coming hot on the heels of HARLAN COUNTY, but the notoriously difficult Ford fell out with the record company and the project was shelved. A number of the tunes here have been heard elsewhere in one form or another; "36 Inches High" was eventually recorded by Ford acolyte Nick Lowe, "Harry Hippie" became Ford's best-known composition via a hit version by Bobby Womack, and a couple more show up on different Ford rarities collections, but this is JIM FORD as it was meant to be heard, a sweet, soulful, slightly stoned mix of country and R&B.
Professional Reviews
Spin (p.91) - "[M]usical hero to Nick Lowe, Ford will be a revelation for fans of Gram Parsons."
